I didn't realize this was a problem.  Our ferrets run all over
the polyurethaned floors with no indication of the slightest
problem, except they slip a lot more than on the rug :).
 
I would just polyurethane whatever it is you wish to seal,
the finish is strong as well if you do it properly (two thin
coats with very light sanding with extra fine sandpaper,
200-250 or so, between coats).  Cheese cloth and gloves
work better than a brush for keeping coats thin.
