Most vets are honest and have integrity, but, there are dishonest vets
out there and it sounds like you've run into one.
 
I would take the ferrets to another vet and get another opinion.  It
sounds like that vet is trying to take you for all you're worth.  Go
with your instincts.

Ps, we got one down here in Pensacola too.  He tried to tell me that my
dog would definitely get a uterine infection if I didn't get her spayed.
He also tried to sell me flea prevention at twice the price of the other
