I have modified a Midwest Cage, too.  Mine was second hand and no longer had
any clips on the bottom.  I just lift the whole wire part off the base to
clean it.  A suggestion, though -- I clip a sheet across the bottom, sort of
curving it up a bit at the edges, to catch debris.  It's *so* much easier to
clean ... you just unclip, carefully fold it up and shake it out into the
garbage can.  I only need to lift the wire off for a thorough cleaning every
other month now.
