Got a non-scruff way of holding a ferret for you to try...

From the back of the ferret, put your index and middle fingers just behind
the cheek bones and your thumb and other two fingers behind the forelegs
from the back. Once you get the knack of this you can hold any jill and
she can not reach you. And most males. Them big neck boys can be tiring
to hold this way but less so than by scruffing.

Its also extrememly easy to manage. We get an ointment from the vet that
we just apply at the first signs of a problem. Never had a long lasting
problem nor permanent damage.
