Actually, that has never worked for our ferrets.  Works great for our cats,
but the ferrets either A: don't connect the water with them doing something
wrong, or B: play with the stream of water.
 
We use a modified NO method.  When one of them does something we don't want
them doing, we pick them up and hold their little head so they have no
choice but to look at us, and tell them NO in a firm (not too loud) voice.
We HAVE seen results, but, of course, them being ferrets, it takes several
times for them to realize we mean it.
