Hi there!  I live in Baltimore, which as some of you may know has been in
the heat-wave that has been going on these past few weeks.  I live in a
basement apartment, with no A/C, but with fans, and three ferrets.  The
ferrets are actually doing fine, as far as I can tell - the apt.  is pretty
cool (being underground and all), they are still perky and playful, though
probably a bit slower than usual.  I have not seen any of them show any
signs of heat distress at all.
 
My question is this: I am home most of the time, and since it is a small
flat, I let them free-roam when I am home.  When I go out, I pop them in
the cage, where they do what seems to me a very strange thing in this
weather - they pile on top of one another in their hammock!  They certainly
do it willingly, and seem fine when I let them out, but I wonder - is this
something I should try to prevent?  They must get hot doing that, though
again, they always seem perky when I let them out.  I guess what I'm asking
is, are they smart enough not to do a silly thing?  Will they stop it if
they get too hot?
