My comment on this - I have microchipped many ferrets, including my own.
Some of them were done at a show.  No anesthesia was needed, any more
than is needed for vaccination.  Their noses in a puddle of Ferretone,
the majority of ferrets do not react at all, and the ones that do, flinch
a small amount, then return to their treat.
 
If anesthesia is being scheduled for another reason - dental cleaning,
minor surgery, etc - then it makes sense to chip at that time.  But I
have never scheduled anesthesia for the purpose of microchipping.
