Yeah, they really DO need the distemper shot.  Luckily, there are 3
different vaccines and a ferret that is allergic to one usually is not
allergic to all three.  Find out which brand he got this time and avoid
that brand from now on.  The available ones are Fervac-D, Galaxy-D and
Merial's new Purevax Ferret Distemper Vaccine.  The Merial vaccine has
proven to be less likely to cause a reaction than the other two.
 
For pre-treatment, the vet gives a shot of Benadryl about 20 minutes
before he gives the vaccine.  Banadryl in an antihistamine and helps to
avoid a reaction.  He may also add a dose of dexamethasone, a steroid to
the pre-treatment.
