The book is part of elementary childrens curriculum, and most teachers say
they love it as a tool with which to teach children about choices and life.
At the time I first encountered it, through the teaching unit workbook, a
ferret was the farthest thing from my mind, and I've never actually read
the book.  I worked for Classroom Connections, a teachers resource store,
and the teachers workbook was what we carried, not the actual stories.  I'm
sure I wouldn't like the book, and my experience with it was about 1993 -
maybe it's no longer being used to teach from...
