Every summer I take two weeks off for vacation and have a friend
ferret-sit for me.  During this time one of my boys loses a dramatic
amount of weight only to regain it as soon as I return.  I can only
guess that this is because Mom is gone and they don't know what to make
of the new person!  I think it is probably more common than you think!  I
guess they love us as much as we love them!
