I have a stubborn fuzzy guy who walks in to the litterbox, sniffs around
and then poops in front of it - about 20% of the time.  I protect my hard
wood floors with sheets of vinyl flooring.  Silly me didn't do this until
2+ years of owning ferrets !  The clean up is so much easier and it does
save (what's left of) my floors.
