Yes, they are illegal, but no, they aren't going to confiscate your pet
unless it bites someone.  Luckily they have the law in place but aren't
really enforcing it.
 
A few tips though:
 
Make sure you have the proper paperwork, including an international health
certificate, dated no more than ten days prior to commencing travel.
 
Double check with Delta to make sure the ferret will be allowed to fly in
the cabin with you on an international flight.  Make the reservation for
the ferret in advance.
 
Don't put a water bottle in the cage, it will drip and leak all over with
the vibrations.  Instead, freeze about half a bowls worth of water in a
small plastic bowl that can clip to the side of the cage.
 
The ferret won't mind the vibrations and noise any more than you do.
 
Have a safe trip.
