Travelling X-country with no A/C and fuzzies??

Has anyone ever travelled across the U.S. in summer with their fuzzies
withOUT air conditioning?  If you have and have any good ideas how to keep
them from overheating, I'd really appreciate a reply (to here or to
[log in to unmask]).  I just can't afford to put in air conditioning
now but I dont' know how I'm going to take them East without it.
