What do you mean 'could"locate" it' ???
 
The whole object of the putting a locator collar on a ferret is that you
*can* locate it!  Ferrets are good at finding their way around when
underground, and they don't need a torch:-)
 
We wouldn't spend 70 pounds on locators if they didn't work.  BTW the other
method (the old way) of finding or shifting a sleeping ferret is to use a
'liner', that's a large hob ferret wearing a harness to which a long line
has been attached.  No electronics involved just a lot of hard work with a
spade.  The liner scares the other ferret into moving or it also gets stuck
in the same place and that's when the digging starts but you never, ever,
abandon your ferrets.
 
Some ferreters have their ferrets trained to surface when they rattle their
car keys or call them!
