I too had the same problems.  I found a rather larger litter pan and
secured it with a bungee.  This seems to work.  Ofcourse you must keep it
clean at alltimes because I have found that when I leave town for a few
days and return they are starting to use the outside of the box.  I have
three males in that cage and one likes to dig alot.  I also have them
trained no potty before they come out of the cage too.  They do very well.
I reward them with laxatone and they love it.
