Ilena,
I attended the course last fall when it was first offered in my area.  It
is really geared for dogs and cats (the book even says so).  However, I did
find it very helpful and the book is a great resource.  I'm sure it is a
nationwide thing, but it isn't offered very often in my area.  I would
definitely urge everyone to attend, especially if you have animals other
than ferrets.  Maybe if enough ferret people show an interest it can be
revised a bit for ferrets.
 
You learn pet CPR on a dummy cat and dog as well as first aid.  I'm sure a
lot of the info can be transferred to apply to ferrets.
