I am working on asking Petco to stop selling ferrets for all the
reasons you mention, including abuse, neglect and the number of
ferrets in shelters, most of which originate from Petco.

Please go to the Facebook page on Ferret Awareness Through Education
(FATE) and fill out the survey there. It will help get statistics that
all of us need to intelligently address these issues.

Jasmin Bettinas has diligently worked on this for three years and will
gather the data and analyze the results.

I have talked with the Avian Welfare Coalition and the Minnesota
Companion Rabbit Society, both of whom have been successful in getting
Petco to stop selling their respective pets, and they say that a
petition has little impact. To get legislation passed the Animals
Protection Institute, now known as Born Free USA, is involved with both
animal abuse and getting laws passed in individual states. Each state
has it's own license laws and some states have no laws about a license
to own an exotic pet. And even though PETA sometimes is considered
radical in their approach, they are successful in getting press
attention, are very well organized and have tremendous impact. Also
contact the Humane Society of America.

Each of these sites will help you with your goal.
