If someone might have influenza then precautions make sense and influenza season will be going on for a while longer, so use loads and loads of hand washing, no coughing or sneezing around the ferrets, etc. Sometimes people have some resistance to the influenza type so have no way to know that the reduced symptoms caused by resistance are actually due to influenza rather than a cold, and the virus can begin shedding before there are reliable symptoms.
