This morning I stopped at the bank drive through to make a deposit. I had
the extra cage for my ferrets in the back. The teller took a quick look
and came back with 2 other people peeking through the window into my back
seat.

She said, "oh darn, you didn't bring them with you. But you sure made
their cage look cozy."

My purse was stolen during a smash and grab. Until the locksmith could
get to my home and change the locks, I took all the ferrets everywhere--
including the bank to cancel my checks and get emergency temporary checks
and a new account number. The burglar had my keys and address. I was
afraid for my babies. I brought all the ferrets in the bank with me.

Everyone was very nice and several people gave me their home numbers in
case I needed them for anything.

But that was TWO YEARS ago!!!!! They remembered me and the ferrets after
TWO YEARS!

This evening I was bringing Baby back from the park with me. We passed my
Polish neighbor whose son brought him over last year. He speaks no
English, so the two of us have been making gestures at one another. He
is most always out front in his yard.

I bow, he curtsies, I make faces and stumble like I am exhausted, or spread
my arms out to welcome a lovely day. He invents his gestures. I never
really think about it. It just happens.

Tonight as I was walking in with Baby I looked up from her pretty face to
see my Polish neighbor looking at me smiling. He tilted his head, put his
hand on his heart and thumped it repeatedly. I smiled back and shook my
head up and down with zeal.

Ferrets in my heart
