Dear Ferret Folks-

One thing I have always noted about my small, dookie hiding friends is
their INCREDIBLE energy level at dawn. Whether they were in their own
ferret room, or whether (as now) they are caged nightly pending the
construction of a ferret room onto our new house, dawn is *the* time.
They want to play, run, zip, bite the cat, knock over mugs, steal
the dog's chow, wrestle, run up and down furniture, knock over
wastebaskets, all in a few minute's time. My sister in law used to
complain that she could *hear* the ferrets having what we call their
'Dawn Romp' right through the floor of our old apartment, which was her
ceiling at the time. They used to wake her up. It lasts about twenty
minutes, and then they are totally drained, and go back to sleep for a
long time.

Now, my husband lets them out of their cage when he wakes up and kindly
*closes* the bedroom door so I don't have to deal with kamikaze ferret
attacks at, say, five thirty in the morning when he gets up. And I can
hear the carnage right through the door. It it a high energy time in
our household. The cat is just as jazzed up, and enjoys going a few
rounds with Ping and Puma until he gets winded. Then Puma stalks him
relentlessly through the house until he howls to be let out. While all
of that is going on, my nocturnal friend France the Fricken' Pygmy
Hedgehog finishes up her nightly run in her wheel. It's...um...a
chaotic time at best.

What I *dont'* ever see is Twilight Romp in the early evening. If it
exists, it is certainly muted in comparison to Dawn Romp, of course I
may really mess Twilight Romp up by having household lighting on all
of the time in the evening. The cat certainly demands to be let out to
hunt at that time, but I don't see much energy coming from the ferrets
until about eight o'clock at night. They have a real energy spike right
about then, and trash the house all over again, although it still isn't
as strong a force as Dawn Romp.

Has anybody else noticed the awesome force that is Dawn Romp?

Alexandra in Ma
