You have just learned the hard way why ferrets are better off caged than
left running free without supervision. Would you allow the birds to fly
free while you were gone?

Get a cage - a buddy will be next but right now you need to get your ferret
his own place to call home. This is not cruel - remember when you were a
teenager and spent a lot of time in your room because it was YOURS and you
felt safe there? Ferrets do not hate cages, unless you are in the room
running free and they are not!

Two ferrets loose will just be double the trouble.
