I think I know what you're talking about-- the nails of my guys do this when
I've let them grow a little too long.  I'd guess it's part of the natural
process of how a ferret would slough off the worn down part of its nails, if
it were engaging in activities that helped to wear them down (and carpet
digging just does not do the trick).  Probably if you trim her nails more
often, you won't see them splitting.  Sometimes they can get caught on
things, so it's a good idea to stop this from happening.
