I always preferred females, but everyone kept saying how the males were
much better tempered. Well now that we are up to 9, I have to agree.
Our males our much better tempered than the females. One of our females
has princess syndrome. (I'm the queen of the ferret room, no other ferrets
are allowed, stay away from my cage, my food dish and my water!) Two of
our females have Pit Bull syndrome. (C'mon, c'mon I dare you to come near
me and I'll kick your furry tail into next week. C'mon come near the cage
I'll pull you thru the bars to kill ya) We have two good natured females
out of 5. They are very mellow and spend most of their time lounging and
grooming. Our boys seem to be much more relaxed and playful.

so if I were to purchase a ferret I would choose a male. The last couple
were semi-rescues and we couldn't say no cause they were females.
