In the Nov 22 issue of People (Seinfeld gets engaged is on cover), theres a
short article about an employee at a wildpark in Florida who rescued a
river otter from being eaten by alligators. She had pried loose a grate in
her enclosure and found her way into the gator pond. With visitors looking
on, he hopped over the fence and wadded into the pond, trying to not
attract the attention of the alligators! He tried catch her in a net, but
churning up the water, he got the attention of a 15 ft alligator who came
after him, so he got a longer pole. He finally got the otter back to shore
and scooped her up in a net, much to the delight of all the bystanders!
Kudos to Art Yerian at the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park! They
have a picture of the otter in the, too. Very cute!
