Commercial ferrets are living just as long as the privately bred
ferrets. Both offer one year health guarantee. It's sad to say, but
some do come down with health problems.

If you are set on purchasing a kit from a small scale ferretry. I
suggest making out checklist. Compile a list of potential breeders.
Have a list of characteristics you're looking for in kit. Then start
interview the breeder(s).

Breeder should be honest about the breed's strengths and weaknesses and
knowledgeable about the genetic diseases. A breeder should be happy to
answer all your questions. (How long have they been breeding ferrets,
How are kits raised in the house, how often are they handled, what is
the family history, Genetic defects, How are they breeding to avoid
those defects?, What vaccine have they had and what age, What are they
eating?, How have they socialized the ferrets, How old is oldest in
the home, etc.)

Most important make sure that you are comfortable with that breeder.
By asking questions you will be able to choose a ferret breeder with
confidence, and you'll be on your way to enjoying your new ferret.

Good luck!
