If youare using Totally Ferret, or any other ferret/cat/kitten food with
your ferrets, if you want to keep it fresher longer, especially the
"natural" kinds, put what you want to use in an air tight container, wrap
the rest back in it's bag and place in the freezer.  When you need more,
pull it out and let it sit until room temperature.
 
Like coffee grounds, it lasts longer, but if you use it quickly, it is fine
just sitting out.  Foods with VIT C & E as preservatives have a shelf life
of under 6 months.  If the food goes rancid, you can usually smell it.  If
it gets moldy, you can see it.  If it gets bugs, it has extra protein, but I
would stick it in the freezer to kill the bugs.....
