I have just discovered that the California senate's Internet location
has an address that will allow one to subscribe to a mailing list
specifically to update bill information (e.g., whenever anything
happens).  Information about this service can be obtained by
sending "HELP" to [log in to unmask] (in the same way
one sends "subscribe ferret-list" to [log in to unmask]
to subscribe to the FML).  You subscribe to the ferret
legalization bill by sending "subscribe bill sb_55" to the same
address ([log in to unmask]).  That is, you send the
stuff in quotation marks in the body of the message (NOT
the subject) to that address.
 
I think the update service includes committee hearings.
