litter and crystals

A few weeks ago someone posted about mixing pelleted litter with those new
crystals to control odor better.  How has that been working?  Anyone else
do it?  I've avoided them because I couldn't imagine what they're made of
and how they may or may not be safe for ferrets.  Any info appreciated.
