Wow, that sounds a bit painful to me!

There is a much easier way to do it, not sure if you've tried this but:

Sit down and lay the ferret on his back (tummy up) with his tail
towards your knees Put a few drops of ferretone on the exposed belly
The ferret curls his head down to lick ferretone while you get easy
access to all four nails

If you do it sitting on the floor other ferrets will try and help (-:
so sitting on a chair is easier!
