When I got Sammy (who survived by the grace of God!) in the early 90s,
he used to travel everywhere with me. I let him loose in the car as
he liked to sleep under the seat. It was distracting if he was awake,
especially when he would run under the accelerator to poop and pee
when he awoke!

I kept my ferrets caged when I traveled after discovering that not
once, but twice!, on dark country roads at night I had left the side
window vents open. Once was with Sammy (who survived by the grace of
God!) and once was with Smokey & Li'l Girl. I stopped and closed the
vent without opening the car doors as I was afraid that if they were
still in the car they would escape while I was checking. If they were
gone, I would never have found them anyway and would have had to live
with that guilt. They were always safe, but no thanks to my stupidity..

When I had the wreck in NC, all 5 ferrets were caged. I found Issy
loose in the car and she came to my panicked voice, Gandalf was thrown
from the car when the cage collapsed and Odie, Skitch & Duncan were
trapped - Odie and Skitch in the bottom of the collapsed cage and
Duncan in his sleepsack in the wagon. If you want to see pics of the
wagon cage and also what is left of the other cage, Diane Campbell took
some pics ( http://www.fuzzyfrenzy.com/renee/renee-accident-pics.html).

I posted back then about how I would do some things differently. I know
travel with collapsible carriers to place ferrets AFTER removing them
from the care - just in case. I also would use carriers that do not
collapse on impact (since I live in Alaska now, they rarely travel
with me).

We live, we learn. Please consider YOUR situation and adjust
accordingly. Ask yourself, What IF? Do you have a plan? Practice it!

I did better. I hope I am doing better now.
