I live in the Ft.  Lauderdale, Florida area, my vet, who is an avian and
exotic only vet, pretreats my ferrets for rabies and distemper with 1ml
of benadryl.  They wait about 15 minutes then give the shot.  I like that
she takes that precaution across the board, it makes me feel safer.
 
She charges $13.00 for distemper
            $11.00 for rabies
nothing extra for Benadryl.
