This is not only an obscure ferret reference, it is an obscure West
Australian ferret reference!
 
Tess Williams' science fiction novel Map of Power is set in Western
Australia about 250 years from now when civilization has fallen due to
world war.  On page 167: "... Morgan noticed the sharpness of his eyes,
the constant hunting and assesment that reminded him of the savage little
ferrets the plains people used to flush out small game."
 
Obviously the WA Ferrets and Ferreting Society did not survive the fall of
civilization as our ferrets aren't savage little things!
