Hello everyone,
 
The vote on AB 409, a bill that would expand DFG's jurisdiction to
domesticated species and mandate that only those animals with no impact on
people, wildlife and the envirnoment would be legalized, was postponed
until at least next Tuesday, July 7th.  Almost 38 bird fanciers showed up to
express their opposition and were extremely disappointed not to be heard.
Ferret folks, you need to do better!
 
The fact of the matter is that the ferret is the real target of this bill
though its current form does jeopardize many other animals both wild and
domesticated.  Senator Alpert expressed concern that while the ferret issue
was one she'd rather see dealt with strictly by the Commission, this bill
was overbroad in its scope.
 
I must encourage all animal organizations and individuals (in California)
that find government over-regulation a concern to contact Senator Hayden's
office to voice their opposition to AB 409.  Citizens receive no
representation from agencies.  It is the legislature's job to listen to the
people.
 
The encroachment of DFG into the arena of domesticated pets should be of
particular concern.  The fax number of the Senate Natural Resources
Committee of which Senator Hayden is chair is: 916 324-4823.  Do not delay,
fax your letters immediately.
 
If you care about having representation in the legislature on ferret
legalization, you must contact members of the Senate Natural Resources
Committee and let them know they must oppose Ab 409.
