I have done the following with dog food (dry) and it works wonderfully.
 
Take the ferret food and check the bag for holes as you have been advised,
then again, pour it into a good Rubbermaid container and refrigerate them.
Take out a "dinner" or lunch portion to warm it to room temperature before
hand before you serve it to the ferrets.  This will not only keep the food
fresher longer, but also kills any bugs or mealy thingies and prevents them
from contaminating food.
