From my actual experience, hairloss on the tail can be from
1) adrenal gland tumor, 2) blackheads, and 3) flea allergy.
 
Don't ignore the problem - call around and find a qualified ferret vet.  Any
ferret shelters in your area or next major town to call for referral (Trish
Curtis can you advise)?  Oh, and 2.5 yo is not an old fuzzy - average
lifespan is about 9.
