I have the most DE-LIGHTFUL tail er tale to tell. We hear so many pet store
horror tales that I had to tell you all about one pet store that I nominate
for "ferret friendly store of the year". I was at a local pet store, Fin,
Fur & Feather yesterday. This was the store I purchased my very first
ferret at and they are always super nice and knowledgable. I went right to
the babies and saw two darling sables curled up sleeping. The pet tech (not
salesperson...these folks are smart and professional) started a conversation
with me. I mentioned how darling the kits were and she talked to me for a
few minutes, realized I was ferret friendly and said to me, "I feel just
aweful, the dark one is a terrible biter and we don't know what we are going
to do". I said that that wasn't the worst thing ever and started tellin her
about the rescue, Layla, I got over the summer from a lady who was terrified
of this "vicious" biter. Took me about 2 months, but the only thing Layla
does now with her mouth is give me a 10 minute tongue bath when I pick her
up....and she was B-A-D!!!

Well, the girl (Dianna) at the pet store asked me if I "rescued" ferrets. I
was a bit hesitant at first and started to tell her about the MaFF shelters,
but she said..."I would really love it if I could follow up on how he does".
Believe it or not guys...she *gave* me this 6 week old MF male. Gorgeous!!!
I didn't give her a chance to change her mind!!!

I brought him home, transfered him to a spare cage and gave him flannel
shirts, food, water, litter pan and then just left him alone to relax. When
hubby got home I told him about "Killer's" problem, but he really didn't
look all that nasty. After dinner, we let him out to romp in the family
room with the other 5 kidz. He just could not believe what was happening.
He ran, danced, pounced, giggled, dooked and practically turned himself
inside out!!! After he had worn himself out I went to pick him up with
gloves on (I did witness his biting in the pet store). I thought better of
it and decided to give him one barehanded chance. Holding my breath I
picked him up...he squirmed a bit...turned, looked at me and licked my
hand!! Before the night was out he had fallen asleep on my chest under my
chin while I read my book. He is an absolute delight!!!! I called the pet
store this AM and asked if she was sure she gave me the right ferret. When
I told her the story she was dumbstruck. She told me the owner had left
this "problem" up to her, but they had checked with MF and a ferret returned
for biting does not stand good odds...they pretty much told her he would be
euthanized. She told me she would not sell him for fear he would bite
someone and/or have someone "throw him away" when he didn't work out. She
is so happy he has a good home and is responding in a ferret like manner
that she reassured me that he is in the right place. She promised to come
visit him and the phone call ended with two very happy ferret owners (of
course she has a ferret at home...but for some reason Killer didn't take to
her...maybe too many other pet smells). Now I have to give him a nicer name
and seeing as Bonnie has adopted him and they look alike he may end up as
Clyde...I know, boring but better than Killer ;) Sorry this is long...it is
just such a great story!!!

Dooks to you!
Janet
