I have been using those blue plastic-backed absorbent pads under the
litterbox (for near misses) and in the corner behind the door (where a
box won't fit).  They are like flat disposable diapers and are available
in drug stores.
 
They absorb the urine quickly and don't soak through like newspaper can.
The surface is soft and non-slippery.
