Does anyone know a good way of eliminating ants, that's ferret safe?

Our shelter has recently started dealing with this problem. We can't tell
where they're coming from. There is no give-away trail. They are rather
large, about the size of carpenter ants, and black. The shelter is located
on the second floor so spraying around the outside of the house isn't really
a useful option. A deterrant which wouldn't require the removal of the
ferrets would work best. I do remember something about Borax as pest
control, but can't remember the details.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
