As if you didn't have enough to worry about keeping your ferrets safe, our
Lowen showed us another ferret hazard today.

Joan was busily baking for Thanksgiving, so she had the oven going most of
the day. She finally finished the last baked item, cornbread; turned the
oven off and took out the pan of cornbread, leaving the oven door open.

Lowen was being his normal ferret self, enamored by all of the great new
smells. Apparently his great hunting nose located one of the possible
sources for the odors - the oven. He hoped right in.

Fortunately, the racks had been covered in aluminum foil, which has a low
heat capacity, and the oven had been turned off, and the door open long
enough that it had cooled considerably. Lowen hopped out faster than he
hopped in.

Joan grabbed him on the fly, and ran cold water over his feet. That upset
him more than the oven did. He spent the next five or so minutes cleaning
his wet tummy where the water splashed. Lowen, I'm happy to say, is dooking
around normally, but is very leery of both the oven and Joan.

So, just one more thing to watch out for, especially during these holidays
(Thursday is Thanksgiving in the USA) with all of the traditional cooking
and baking:

Watch out for hot ovens and open oven doors. Always make sure the oven door
is closed unless you are putting something in or taking something out.
Double check inside the oven before you close the door to make sure that
nothing else climbed inside.
