Who cares if two and a half year old Geoffrey would have died from
a blockage? Certainly not his owner, who didn't even notice Geoffrey
was in distress when she dumped him and his partner off at the shelter
because nobody had time for them anymore -- they were ignored and
unloved. Such a burden!

But the wonderful folks at the Greater Chicago Ferret Association knew
that Geoffrey's life was worth plenty and the world would be a lesser
place without this sweet, goofy boy. Geoffrey was lethargic, had bloody
stools and was in obvious pain. They rushed him to the vet where x-rays
revealed a problem. After a 4 hour surgery the vet informed them that
he had cork in his stomach and intestines and at one point, there was
a perforation where the cork leaked into his abdomen. That was at 10
o'clock at night. At 8am the next morning, the vet called to let them
know that Geoffrey now had a urinary blockage, due to early onset
adrenal disease. After a loading dose of Lupron and one day of having
a urinary catheter, he was acting like nothing had ever happened. A
month later, he is acting like a normal ferret, dooking up a storm,
and eating like a pig. He will have to be on Lupron for life, but, as
Ron Crivello of the GCFA says "without funding from SOS, we would not
have been able to afford his extensive veterinary care".
