I used cornstarch to stop the bleeding when Belle ripped off her nail
many years ago.  Such a blood curdling scream she let out sent me racing
from the other room!!Not sure how she did it.
 
I took her to the vet the next day as her toe was swollen.  He gave me
an ointment called Tritop (combination antibiotic, anti-inflammatory,
anesthetic).  She limped for a day or two, but was otherwise ok.
 
It took months before the toenail grew back.
