My little Akasha was diagnosed with insulinoma about a year ago.  Earlier
this year, it was becoming apparent that prednisolone alone was not keeping
her blood sugar up high enough (it was hovering around 40), so the vet put
her on Proglycem (diazoxide) at 0.1 cc, twice a day.
 
Well, after two months on proglycem, her hind legs were getting weaker and
weaker and she wasn't eating much and basically avoiding everything.  I took
her to the vet again and her blood sugar was sky-high -- over 400!!  The
poor thing has been diabetic for two months.  I wanted to scream.
 
Has anyone out there ever dealt with a ferret with insulinoma on this
particular medicine.  I am shocked and outraged the vet didn't mention
titrating the dose of proglycem as we had with the prednisolone.  What I am
trying to find out is if most ferrets show such an overwhelming response to
this medication?  I am wondering if my vet, who I am less and less
impressed with all the time, is ignorant of the effects of this medicine in
ferrets and just guessed at a dosage based on dogs or cats.  My poor little
girl has been really diabetic for 2 months now -- God knows what damage
I've done to her with this damn stuff.
