From Judi in DC:

The rescue group is All about Bandit (the Scotts) in Crownsville, MD --
they take the DC ferrets. They work with the American Ferret Association
(AFA). At one time, the AFA was trying to make ferrets legal in DC.
Since DC is so small, and there are so few ferret owners there, there
were not enough people to get a movement going. After all, you have to be
a resident of an area to have a voice in getting the actual laws changed.
Since DC is at least releasing the ferrets instead of automatically
destroying them, the ferret groups in VA and MD have been content to leave
things as they are. If you live in DC, and want ferrets legalized, you'll
have to get DC folks to take up the call. The simplest thing is to get
ferrets removed from the list of wild and exotic animals that are banned
as pets in DC.
