Yes, it is August but already you are talking of Xmas trees.  So here is my
advice.  Cats and most ferrets don't like the smell of citrus.  Therefore,
if you hang a few slices of say orange or lemon slices from the bottom of
the tree, the smell will keep the two tree topplers away.  The smell is a
nice one, and when they dry, you have an ornament.  There you have it.  A
simple way to keep cats and ferts away from the tree!  Hope it helps!
