In addition to the number of cases of various recently in the news in
the Mid-atlantic region:

These are the first dog cases there since 2001.

I have noticed a number of free community rabies clinics now vaccinate
ferrets as well as cats and dogs, but i doubt they take reaction
protections. For example:
