I struggled with ear cleaning/nail clipping etc for a while and then had a
brain wave and now I have no trouble!!!
 
I smear a little ferretone or ferretvite on the edge of a shelf (at about
my chest height) then I hold the ferret over my left arm (with their nose
level with the ferretone/vite) and hold the foot (for nail clipping) in my
left hand.  I then manage to clip all the claws while the ferret is totally
distracted licking off the ferretone/vite.  It works for me.
