Some of them will dig down to the bare floor, but you can protect the
spots they're digging.

Mainly at the bottom edges of closed doors.  Sometimes at the edge of
anything they think they have a chance of getting into or under (e.g.,
a couch an inch above the floor).

Don't count on it.  You're much better off thinking of ways to protect the
spots that they do dig.  Cut a piece of plastic carpet protector to the
right shape and fasten it to the floor.  Other choices include chicken wire,
hardware cloth, wire screen, or carpet-sample squares from carpet stores.
