Animals generally go into their first heat any time between the ages of 4 to
8 months (four months is early, but has been known to happen).  The hormone
shot has some rather nasty side effects, but cannot remember what they are,
I just remember that we refused to do them and mis-mating shots when I
worked for the vet.  Perhaps an honest vet can explain in detail the pros
and cons.
