I think your guess that the litter you are using may be a problem is a
good guess. See what you can do about getting a friend to come over and
change out the litter and wash your ferret's area. Instruct your friend
to use plain soap and water to clean the area and, if feasible, avoid
using a vacuum so that litter dust doesn't get flung around everywhere.
With your eye problems it doesn't sound like you should attempt this
task yourself. Then get all of the old brand of litter out of your
place.

Try switching to a non-perfumed variety, one brand that shouldn't
aggravate you too badly is "Yesterday's News" and be sure to get the
non-perfumed variety. If you can't find that particular brand, what you
are looking for is a brand made from recycled newspaper. You could also
try shredded paper for a while (you could probably get this by the bag
load from one of the administration offices at the college you attend).
The point is to find something that is not impregnated with
perfumes/chemicals which may be setting off your eye problems.

Other possibilities include whatever cleanser(s) you use to clean the
ferret's area, an air conditioner or deodorizer spray you might be
using in the ferret's area, something in your ferret's food is getting
to you, or if not your ferret, then maybe your ferret's urine/feces.

Perfume/chemical allergies are fairly common. I hope you are able to
find relief and that the problem need not include finding a new home
for your beloved ferret companion.

Best of luck,
Lorraine
& Al (the decidedly aging, but still adorable ferret)
