I've always known this would happen, but knowing can never prepare you for
the inevitable. I lost the first ferret I ever had today. When I went to
feed the fuzzies this morning, Zorro was curled up in one corner of the
cage and didn't get up with the others when they came to the door to greet
me. When I called his name, he still wouldn't move. My baby was so fond
of pulling the "dead ferret" trick on me...I thought he was just having
some fun with his mommy...but he wasn't. At least I have the comfort of
feeling sure that he didn't go painfully. It looked like he just lay down
to sleep and didn't wake up. He was the sweetest little sable boy you'd
ever want to meet. He was always smaller than the other boys, but that
didn't make him any less tough or energetic. I can remember when we first
got him seven years ago. He was such a darling little ball of fluff. And
he was his mommy's boy. I was doing my undergraduate work at the time,
and I would lie on my bed to do my studying, and when Zorro had tired
himself out playing, he would come and crawl into my shirt and lie next to
my tummy for a nap. It was a habit he kept over the years. I'm really
going to miss having that little warm fuzzy body under my shirt and next
to my tummy.

Sandee, please keep an eye out for Zorro. He doesn't have any brothers or
sisters up there to greet him yet, so he might be sort of lonely up there
at first. But he was always the first to greet a newbie, so I'm sure
he'll make new friends very quickly. Could you be sure he finds some
granola bars, since he never did care much for raisins? And Sandee, tell
him his mommy loves him very much and will always miss him. Thanks.

Everyone hug your fuzzies a little bit longer tonight for me.
